Forum Thread: Xain'd Sleena (Bootleg) PCB Repair
Sent to me for repair by an Aussie Arcade member for another member who was after one (but then decided after it was fixed not to pay for it.
Problem reported was freezing on the select screen for which planet to visit.
When plugged in it was just a static garbage screen no action at all.
This board uses 3 x 68B09EP processors and one was missing (E-3)
Its not a common CPU and I only had a similar unit (a 6803P CPU) seeing as its pretty much the same thing I popped it in to see what would happen as I couldn't be arsed finding the exact CPU just yet.
Upon power up it started up normally (no garbage) and was OK untill the planet select screen upon where it would freeze (original indicated fault)
Seeing as the CPU was not quite the correct type I decided that after seeing a good result from the board with the other 6803 CPU to try a 68B09P CPU I spotted lying right near me. Powered up the board and no go...... BUGGER.
OK time to shift gears I think... I just remembered my POD has the correct cpu in it so I removed it from the pod and powered up the PCB and BINGO! works correctly now.
It seems that the missing CPU was at least at one stage replaced incorrectly with a similar type CPU but there are subtle differences.... problem solved... or so I thought.
After about 1 hour the audio went shit... and I mean real shit. wobbly crackly sound but still playing correctly. The amp was HOT... very hot.... not good.
Anyway swapped the amp out and noticed that the board has had this problem for a while as the PCB is a little brown underneath. Still overheating so not the amp... only thing left is the caps themselves, didnt have my ESR meter with me so I shotgunned all 5 of them and fixed the problem... FINALLY!!!
Anyway I think the original problem was bad/dry caps causing audio failure for the operator and was scrapped hence the missing cpu.
STATUS : FIXED
