Forum Thread: Salamander PCB Repair

Symptom: Explosion and fire sounds missing. In test mode (for sounds) the music was playing all the time and the first few sounds were only the shot sound which is of course wrong
Cure: Bad LS374 at 12J – replaced

Symptom: Assorted pixel-sized video corruption, ie flickering pixels, pixels missing, present where they shouldn’t be, etc
Cure: Assorted bad video RAMs: 4164’s at 5H, 7G and the LS157 just below 1F (all Object RAM as per the Color Test screen). Also a bad 4416 at 6A (caused the normally black background to be blue with lines)

Symptom: On bootup, text screen with ROM and RAM test info has all the letters flipped vertically, also the boardset resets after this screen is displayed and goes through the same process again, repeat ad infinitum. Test grid is NOT displayed.
Cure: Bad outputs on the LS245 at location 17D on the CPU board, pin 17 seemed to be the most obviously out of whack from looking at it on my ‘scope. Replaced chip.
